Aromatase Inhibitors are indicated for the treatment of breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) early breast cancer. The recommended starting dose is 0.5mg, taken as needed approximately one week before the development of advanced breast cancer. With progression of the disease, the dose may be increased to 0.5mg or decreased to 0.1mg. With adjuvant hormone therapy, the starting dose is 0.5mg. With adjuvant tamoxifen, the starting dose is 0.1mg. With the exception of anovulatory patients, these patients have no evidence of symptomatic hyperandrogenism, nor are they steroid-dependent. The usual duration of therapy is 10 days. The use of an and tamoxifen in postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer is contraindicated due to potential cardiovascular effects, including an increased risk of stroke and myocardial infarction (heart failure).
Note: This product should not be taken with anticoagulants (blood thinners) and other hormonal contraceptives (including cyproterone/estrorelix).

Arimidex (Anastrozole) is used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Arimidex may also be used for purposes other than what it is intended for to treat breast cancer.
Dosage:The usual starting dose of Arimidex for treating breast cancer in postmenopausal women is 5 mg three times a day. The dosage for Arimidex in women with a positive hormone (liver, kidney, or prostate) or hormonal (lactose or glucose-dependent) evaluation is based on the amount of tumor removed and the clinical response. The maximum recommended dosing frequency for Arimidex in women is once per day. A maximum of three Arimidex cycles are recommended per cycle. To minimize the risk of hyperandrogenism during Arimidex therapy, it is recommended that patients have regular breast examinations.
Contraindications:Arimidex is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any component of the medication or in those with certain gastrointestinal (duodenal or esophagitis) disorders. Arimidex is also contraindicated in patients with a history of thromboembolic events during treatment with Arimidex or any other medications that may lead to stroke, myocardial infarction or ventricular arrhythmia. Patients with known hypersensitivity to anastrozole (Arimidex) are not recommended for treatment with Arimidex. Arimidex may result in an increased risk of breast cancer development, especially in women who are menopausal, and in patients with pre-existing conditions that may worsen with age. Patients who have been prescribed Arimidex should have their annual gynecologic examinations done before starting treatment with the drug. In addition, Arimidex is contraindicated in patients who are taking the anticoagulant warfarin. Arimidex can increase the risk of thromboembolic events in patients who take warfarin.
Pregnancy and lactation:Arimidex crosses the placental barrier and has been used during pregnancy for the treatment of breast cancer. A single daily dose of Arimidex during the first trimester of pregnancy is equivalent to five daily doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) given by gavage. There are no clinical data on the effect of Arimidex in lactating women. Therefore, women who are breast-feeding must not take Arimidex.
Interactions:Arimidex has been shown to have some degree of interactions with medications, some of which may have a negative effect on Arimidex metabolism. Drugs that inhibit the metabolism of Arimidex, such as CYP3A4 inhibitors, may decrease the efficacy of Arimidex in lowering the blood levels of Arimidex. Drugs that may interact with Arimidex in the treatment of breast cancer, such as CYP3A4 inhibitors, may increase the plasma levels of Arimidex and may reduce the therapeutic effect of Arimidex. Drugs that may have a negative effect on the effects of Arimidex, such as CYP3A4 inhibitors, may decrease the blood levels of Arimidex. In addition, Arimidex can increase the plasma levels of anastrozole (anastrozole) and letrozole (follistimethoxazole). In patients with anastrozole or anastrozole-resistant tumors, therapy should be initiated with Arimidex in anastrozole-recombinant or anastrozole-sensitive anastrozole-responsive breast cancer. If a patient develops resistance to Arimidex, the drug should be discontinued. In some cases, the use of Arimidex in patients with anastrozole-resistant or anastrozole-recombinant tumors may lead to the growth of malignant tumors.
Adverse Reactions:Adverse reactions to Arimidex include breast, thyroid, skin, bone, and joint effects. These adverse reactions may be more likely to occur in patients who are taking the drug. Patients who develop breast cancer in response to Arimidex should be monitored closely for signs of hyperandrogenism, such as hot flashes, vaginal discharge, and breast tenderness.
Special Considerations:Special precautions should be taken in patients with certain medical conditions or those taking specific medications.
